FP2002 Display of _borders directory

FP2002 Display of _borders directory

am 11.04.2008 21:11:02 von GLMoore

I have had FP2002 installed on a desktop PC (OS = XP Home) for many years,
and use it to update my site regularly; all of the hidden folders are set to
display, so I see _borders, etc. in the folder list and can access the pages
stored there in order to edit them.

I recently installed FP2002 on my laptop (also XP Home) and am using that
instance of the program to construct a web site for a friend; I have not yet
uploaded the site to the host server for the first time. Even though I have
optioned to see the hidden folders in this install of FP2002, I do not see
the _borders folder (I do see _private.) Consequently, I can't edit the
content of left.htm or bottom.htm.

Is this related to the fact that the site hasn't been published yet?

If there was something I did, all those years ago, to make the _borders
folder and its contents visible/accessible, I don't now remember it, and my
FP 2000 Complete Reference book isn't helping me with this issue.

I appreciate any suggestions you can offer...

GLMoore

_private is always created when you create a Web / Site, but _borders is not
until you create the borders (Format | Shared Borders).

Thanks, Rob --

I created the borders yesterday (Insert>Shared Borders), then went looking
for bottom.htm to edit the content, but could not access the folder or page
.... do I have to do something -- e.g., close / reopen FP -- for these to
become visible?

I went back into Tools to be certain that the view Hidden Folders option was
still on, which it was ... but no joy.

If you can think of something else, I will try it....

Thanks again,
GLMoore

Do you have Shared Borders enabled?
Tools | Page Options | Authoring - this is FP2003 can't remember if it was
in the same place in 2002

Re: FP2002 Display of _borders directory

The only Shared Borders control I'm aware of in FP2002 is: Format>Shared
Borders, where you select which side (top, bottom, left) you want the border
to appear on and whether it is all pages or current page. This is what I
have done to initiate the bottom border I wanted to use: bottom, all pages.
Now I want to edit the content of _border/bottom.htm, but it isn't accessible.

The Help file doesn't mention any other settings needed, but because borders
require FPSE to work properly when the site is live, I was concerned that
maybe I couldn't see the _borders folder because it wasn't created until the
site had been published to a host server with the extensions active.
Obviously, with no PWS available on the XP platform, there is no local
equivalent to the FPSEs to "turn on" the borders locally. Or at least,
that's what I'm assuming at this point.

There is a Compatibility tab on the Tools>Page Options dialog window, which
offers brower server options ... both fields are set to "Custom" on my
dialog. There is no mention of borders on this tab; all the checkboxes under
the Available Technologies section are ticked, tho.

I understand I can use include pages as an alternative approach to get the
content I want on my pages, and may do that to meet the deadline for this
site ... but I still would like to understand what makes the _border folder
and its pages accessible/editable.

I appreciate your assistance....

You can create shared borders on a disc based web (no server needed) - and
the _borders folder is created as soon as you add one to a page.

And...yes...page includes are a much better choice.

You wrote:

and that's how I remember it also, but since the automatic creation of the
_borders folder definitely did not happen this time for whatever reason, I'm
turning to include pages as an alternative....

Thanks again for your suggestions,
