slideshow pictures

I've run across other websites on my laptop that have
a slideshow of pictures that display one at a time on a
timed basis and some move on as you click the picture.
Some even fade away as they are moving on.
So I put a Java Script routine to slideshow my pictures
but now I get a message from my browser (same machine
and same browser that I was viewing the others on) that
says Java Script is disabled since it could harm my computer.
Obviously these previous pages I was viewing were doing
these slideshows without Java Script. How are they doing
this ?

Most likely with Flash.

The javscript error comes up if you view the page *locally* rather than on
the web i.e. viewing the page via c:\my documents\my webs\your
web\index.html rather than http://www.yourweb.com/index.html
It is a security feature of the browser, not an error in the script.
Other methods available are probably done with Flash or a java applet.
