MIME Extensions

am 22.04.2008 18:50:47 von MariLu

This is a follow-up to a previous posting regarding .docx file issues on my
server. Based on all the very good advice I received, it looks like I
probably need to specify additional MIME extensions. The feedback from my
host is that "If FP extensions are enabled, then you must use your version
of Microsoft FrontPage to handle mime types". I'm running FP2000 and cannot
find anything in the help files regarding MIME extensions. Can somebody
point me to how I handle this within FP? As always, thanks for the patience
and for sharing the good stuff...

FP doesn't have any functions to manage mime types.

I'm beginning to get a headache....

Would you mind taking a look at the note at the bottom of this page from my
host, regarding MIME and FP extensions? Am I misinterpreting what they are
saying, or are they misinformed?

Thanks for your help,

Re: MIME Extensions

am 23.04.2008 06:25:36 von Mark Fitzpatrick

I think it's more a conflict between the FP Server Extensions, and whatever
functionality they use to handle MIME types. I don't know if these are Linux
boxes or not, my guess is they are since that's what their main domain name
is running off of. If so, then you can adjust them using the htaccess file
(here's a sample http://www.modwest.com/help/kb1-231.html) It could be that
since FP has particular permission requirements, it could be that their
system is unable to make changes to the htaccess file or that there's a
problem with the build of the FP Server Extensions they are running. It
sounds a little bit inept though because FP has nothing to do with this sort
of stuff because MIME types are controlled solely by the web server.

Hope this helps,

You need to open the control panel for your web site and add the mime type there.
Normally to open the control panel you simply add cpanel to your website address:

www.mysite.com/cpanel and then give the user name and password when prompted.
The user name and password should be that same that you use when you publish your web.

Re: MIME Extensions

Thanks for all the excellent feedback. The site is running on Linux boxes
and the control panel offers a convenient method for adding MIME's.
Unfortunately, when FP extensions are installed, this option is disabled, so
there is apparently a significant conflict. I've submitted a ticket, asking
them to do it manually. We'll see what happens. Thanks again for all the
help.

Dunno about a conflict per se, as I am running one site on a linux box and
am able to add mime-types through cPanel, they probably want to keep control
of what users may try to add/change/delete.

IIRC, Rob, their page said it was not functional from the C-Panel as long as
extensions were installed.

Yep you're right, if you want to use cPanel to add mime type you have do
uninstall the FPSE first. Yuck. Coulda sworn I'd done it before...getting

Must be a host specific issue then.
all of my sites run on Apache servers with extensions, and I can edit mime types via CPanel.
