reduce number of open files ?

hi list,
i am wondering if there is a way to reduce the number of open files.
The database has InnoDB and MyISAM. I have a lot a partitions is that a problem ?
(To many open files causes problems for mysqldump)

running is vanilla 5.1.34

show status like '%open%' ;
