My brief understanding of it is that MySqli is more feature rich and
better able to handle changes as MySql moves forward. Some have said
it is faster, though I have not personally seen any benchmarks to show
the real gains.

There are some features in MySqli that you can not do with the normal
MySql "driver" apparently.
