getting started - need pointers

getting started - need pointers

am 28.05.2009 20:11:26 von Mike Kay

Greetings. I am trying to get PHP installed and working on a Windows
server - Windows Standard 2007. I've downloaded and installed PHP 5.2.9.
Problem is I don't know how to use this at all. My web server is Apache
2.2 - my database is Mysql.

I selected the Apache module 2.2 during the install, and added support for
Mysql in extensions.

How can make windows start PHP on boot?
When I click on a .php file, the file opens rather than runs. Obviously
I've missed something. There is a command phpinfo - to view the parameters
of the PHP installed - I don't remember how to run this on the command
line.

Any help MOST appreciated.
Also, I'm seeking pointers to beginners documentation for Windows users.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the post. Downloading now. Should I uninstall PHP, Mysql and
Apache before installing WAMP?

Try Zend Server CE - http://www.zend.com/community/zend-server-ce
It's also got some value-add like best performance, Java connectivity,
etc...
Works with both Apache on Windows and supports IIS natively.

Let me know if you have any issues.

You might need to uninstall the Apache server that you installed
before WAMP. If you still have that old one running, http://localhost
will be pointing to the old server rather than the WAMP one.

Thanks Joe, my, same thoughts too .... or Mike is using short tags or not
correct like and not etc ... but I think its more like Joe is
saying ...its not calling the wamp stuff but still he's orignal installs.

Lets see what happens ... Oh and mike ...make sure WAMP is started ...should
see a little icon in system tray (looks like speedometer, if its all white
everything started fine ... if its 2/3 yellow something failed to start...
if its 1/3 red ... then there is issues with starting the services .... hint
left click on icon to get pop-up menu ... with options for php and apache.

Hope Joe gives you some pointers too...

Lets go back to the very beginning - to use a webserver, you have to
view your PHP file in a webserver, not by double clicking on .php file

Installing the server may have been successful, but to view it you need
to open up a web browser and head to http://localhost

I repeat - double clicking on a .php file does nothing - you need to use
a browser to visit the webpages from your newly installed server.

There is also a PHP command line interface if you so desire. To use
this, you need to go to start->run and type cmd.exe

Then you need to figure out exactly where PHP is installed - c:\program
files\php or wherever you put it. cd to this location and then type

>php -v

to see what version you are running

>php -i

will give you the phpinfo() information

Thanks,
Elizabeth Smith

I think the best choice is to follow Andi's recommondation, beecause
Zend Server CE is a very reliable and highly performant platform to
start building on. It comes along with a bundled Apache 2.2, MySQL
support and a lot more features like Code Acceleration, Caching and PHP
debug functionality!
Because you already have MySQL and Apache installed on your system you
can easily set Zend Server on top of these; the installer will
automatically find your web server and you'll have the choice to use
this one instead of the bundled Apache2.2.

There are a lot of tutorials out there for beginners (simply do a search
on google for "php get started"...), but I would recommend these:

http://www.php.net/getting-started
http://www.w3schools.com/PHP/php_intro.asp

Good luck and let us know how you get along,

Sascha

Are you browsing your localhost server:
http://localhost/

That host name standardly maps to the IP address 127.0.0.1, and that's the
local instance of your web server.

If you've installed Apache on server 2008 (2007 dne!)(.... Or did you
mean Vista?)
There should be no problem, as IIS does not get installed automatically
on a 'standard' build.

If IIS is installed, it may well be fighting Apache for the use of port
80.
Of course, its up to you which web server you use, and PHP will run on
IIS (config is a bit fiddly)
Try checking for the IIS admin server. If this is listed in services,
and shown as running, stop and set it to either manual or disabled, then
try starting the apache service and set that to automatic.

That's partly why I run IIS on port 80, and the apache from WAMP on port 81,
so they can run alongside each other.

Same here, only Apache gets port 8080 and 443 (SSL). I'm pushing WAPP
for new projects here but we have a zillion ASP.NET / SQL Server
projects which means I have to have both IIS and Apache on my machine.=20

WAMP has already been mentioned, but WAPP's mighty fine too using
PostgreSQL rather than MySQL. You can find wonderful all-in-one
installers at www.bitnami.com as well for those and other open source
bundles.

I'm about a month new to PHP / PostgreSQL as well. My top resources have
are:

PHP Manual (this is golden) http://php.net/manual/en/index.php

That's partly why I run IIS on port 80, and the apache from WAMP on port
81,
so they can run alongside each other.

Stay well

RE: getting started - need pointers

Hi, Jacob: My name is Mai-lan and I run the engineering IIS team here at Mi=
crosoft. I also run the PHP on Windows effort at Microsoft, which means I h=
ave an engineering team that focuses on PHP support and great Interop on Wi=
ndows.=20

One thing that I wanted to ask:
1. Had you heard of/knew about the support that IIS has for PHP with the WS=
2008 release (http://php.iis.net/)? If you have, I am curious to understan=
d more about your decision path towards hosting both Apache and IIS for you=
r ASP.NET and PHP apps -- that will help us better understand how we can be=
a better platform for PHP apps as well as ASP.NET apps.

Thanks,
Mai-lan

RE: getting started - need pointers

am 29.05.2009 16:55:19 von Mike Kay

Thank you all for your input. Let me be specific about what this server
I'm building is to do. It's MAIN purpose is to use as a Bugzilla machine.
Bugzilla requires a database, a Web server, ActivePerl and a mail server.
The Bugzilla docs stated the preferred platforms as Mysql, Apache - and
along with that PHP needs to be working. I have installed hMail server as
the mail server although it has not been configured yet.

I HAD Bugzilla installed, MySql setup and configured, Apache working
through my firewall ActivePerl working - but no PHP. When I went to the
PHPWEBAdmin directory via a browser, instead of seeing the index.php - I
got a listing of files in the directory.

Since I have uninstalled everything and am starting from scratch. I'm
going to try using WAMP. I'm downloading and installing it right now. I
will then backtrack and make sure all needed modules and installed and
start configuring the various ini and conf files.

I hope I have better luck this time. But my knowledge level has climbed a
lot and I have a better understanding of what I'm doing - thanks in part
to your posts.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Multiple result sets using PDO and PostgreSQL.

am 04.06.2009 19:11:25 von Matthew.Hartman

Is it possible?=20

I have created a function to return "setof refcursor" and it executes
correctly, but PDO fails when I call nextRowset.=20

If anyone has an answer and wants StackOveflow points, I posted this
here (with more details too).
