MySQL Windows version

MySQL Windows version

am 10.07.2009 18:08:43 von Russ F

I have been using the Linux version of MySQL for five years, also used it on
a Windows ME system even though documents said you couldn't. Recent a friend
asked me to help him get it up and running on a Windows Vista system.

I was looking for the system configuration requirements but could not find
them in the manual (or I missed them)? We want to use localhost.
Do you need Apache and PHP? Is there a Windows application that works like
phpMyAdmin? I tried MySQLAdmin on my Linux system, but I could not cut and
paste SQL Commands into the editor.

Anything pointing to the above would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Only if you need to access MySQL from PHP via browser. If you are a
programmer then there are many languages like Delphi that can access MySQL
directly using a 3rd party component, or use ODBC from most programs that
can access a database.

Try SQLYog since it is my favorite. Download the free community edition at
http://www.webyog.com/en/downloads.php#sqlyog

You could run php (and thus phpmyadmin) on windows - in contrast with
earlier versions, 5.3 is actually pretty good.

The problem I've had with every GUI MySQL client I've tried is that
they attempt to download whole tables on a regular basis. If you have
large tables that makes them completely unusable. FileMaker Pro does
the same thing too. phpMyAdmin is the only one I've found that's
reliable and immune to that particular problem. There are probably X
apps you could run remotely that could solve the same problem, though
not for Windows.

Toad for MySQL would be another option.

I agree with you, but phpMyAdmin is not available for Windows that I'm aware
of. The person I'm helping today is a windows user and except for a little
Access Experience does not do databases well. I have the database set up in
mysql so thats what I am hoping to get him using. Other choice is use Excel.

So I hope one of these recommendations works.

Thank for your response.

Thanks to everyone who replied. We will install MySQL on my friends Vista
system this afternoon. It will be a learning experience for me since I
personally have not used MS products Since my Win ME system died in early
2000. I do have a virtual Win XP so I can do my Taxes each year.

Thanks again.

As phpMyadmin is a web application run through a web server, there is no
Linux or Windows version. They all work on any web server.

You just un zip/rar/tar etc. the latest version to your web server
folder as explained in the documentation.

Thanks we got that done and can get to mysql from the command line and from
SQLyog812. Had trouble from the browser with phpmyadmin which I prefer, but
I'm sure its because he forgot to install Apache. Will do that tomorrow or
Tuesday. We are running on localhost only. Need to find the server folder on
XP and check it also.

Thanks for your input it was a help, been to long since I worked on MS
products.

[JS] The only "trick" with using localhost is that it goes through the
network stack, so do NOT disable that.

[JS] You can use IIS, Apache, or Tomcat; MySQL is completely oblivious to
any and all web servers.

[JS] I use PHPAdmin. When you install the Windows MSI package for PHP, it
will ask you which web server you want to configure. You'll want to run the
MSI using admin privileges.

Solved. We downloaded WAMP and it install in less than file minutes. We used
phpmyadmin and the SQL option to build the database. Everything is working
fine.

Thanks for everyones responses.
