RFC/Survey for Our Newer Folks (Including Lurkers)

Ladies and Gentlemen:

First of all, if you're new to the list, welcome. At the risk of
bragging about our collective talents, you are now a member of a
community that is home to what may be some of the best talent in web
development you'll find on the Internet. I'm not speaking of myself,
but of your peers on this list. I could mention names, but that's
beyond the scope of this particular request.

What I would like to know is how you found out about this list.
For example, did you go out of your way to find a support channel for
PHP? Did you come to the source website, find out about the mailing
list, and decide to subscribe? Did you submit a note to the php.net
website requesting assistance and have your note rejected, and follow
the instructions in the email that myself or another PHP Group member
sent? Were you referred here by a friend, website, or publication?

I would like to hear from all of you, and if you don't want your
email address or words to be publicly archived, you're more than
welcome to reply to me personally. I'd like to speak particularly
with folks who joined this list because of submitting a note to the
site and having it rejected, but I want all opinions. So if you've
been here for less than 90 days or so, how did you wind up here, and
did you have any problems in joining or complaints about the
subscription process?

If you've never posted and wanted a chance to introduce yourself,
here's your chance. Breaking the ice and getting that first email out
of the way may be all that's between you and immortality as the next
great contributor to the project. Just remember the little people
when you reach fame and fortune. ;-P

Howdy Daniel and Group,

I'm new here, in fact, my first post was just a few days ago. I'm a
computer hobbiest hoping to transition myself into the IT world at some
point in the near future, having spent most of my life working in building
construction. (Guess, I'm just getting too old and tired to cut the mustard
there.. ;-) I've just started trying to learn web development with php, but
I've done alot of reading and poking around in a few other languages, but
nothing in a big way.

I came upon this newsgroup after looking around on the main php
documentation site and finding a notice there about it. My coming here was
brought about by me posting on a couple of forums and waiting for days for
an answer of any kind, if I were to get an answer at all. I am glad to have
found this place since the members seem to be quite knowledgable and most of
all, willing to share that knowledge. I'll try not to be a nuisance with
frivolous questions and go to the docs and search engines first. Thanks you
all for being here and for being so willing to help.

Hello,

I've been a developer for a little over a year now (I started when I just
turned 16), frankly I love coding and helping out others. I joined the list
as my second mailing list (WHATWG is first), mailing lists just provide a
different atmosphere than forums, blogs or message boards.
I found the list by the link on php.net (lists.php.net), I mainly joined to
grow in my experience with PHP.

I was using the php.net website for ages for syntax reference, saw the mailing
list and figured why not. No amazing story, but now you're all stuck with
me :p

Mark:

First, welcome to the list.

Second, there are no frivolous questions. If you have a question, just ask.

Third, searching the docs and SE first is good, but sometimes you may
not know what to search for, if so we can help.

Fourth, don't be embarrassed by something you don't know -- because
you're not alone. I often ask question on this list as well. I'm
never held back by my ignorance, as I am sure some here will testify.
The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

Cheers,

tedd

16! I have underwear older than that. :-)

But when I was 16, computers hadn't been invented yet, so you're
ahead of the game in my book.

Welcome to the list.

You've been here longer than 90 days, right?

Apparently your reading and retention skills are fading like mine.

You're just lucky Tedd got to you first, Ash. I was going to
fairy-slap you for messing up the rotation! You've been here, what,
about a year now? ;-P

And here's hoping there will be more to come.

About a year and a half now I think.

I had seen it and the others on php.net. When I decided to get serious
about programming in general and PHP in particular, I signed up. Lurked
for a while. Then finally posted when I had an issue I couldn't figure
out on my own.

Hi,

I've been using php in a unix enviroment from the beginning and always
found
sufficient and useful information without using news.php.net .

Recently I've begun maintaining a mixed OS system and have a need to
use php on windows (mostly to encourage the shop to move everything
off windows) .

The information and support of php on windows is not as good.
Thus, I sought more sources and decided to use news.php.net.
Not much for the MS platform and I have no answer to the owners
when they suggest getting rid of all the freebsd/apache/php/mysql
boxes. They are aware of all the pecl extensions and also aware that
the windows.php.net site has not yet supported binary extension
builds.

Urgh ! What do I tell them?

How about what you started with here:

I just have to take this slightly(?) off topic, as that is expected
behaviour here :-).

I thought I had been around for about five years or so, but a quick search
on marc turned up contributions from me as far back as September 2000

http://marc.info/?l=php-general&m=96822528212538&w=2

On reflection, I suspect that the marc archives may not go back as far as
when I first joined what was then a mailinglist only (I think!). Although I
find contributions to other mailing lists back as far as 1995. $deity, I
must be getting old.

Overcoming resistance to open source software that runs on
windows is easy. Overcoming the belief that "it's a windows world"
is more difficult.

I can show the values of php through the point of view windows offers.
Getting phbs to look at non-MS OSs is not easy. It's a matter of
one step at a time and "choose your battles".
Cost/benefit analysis is not enough. phbs do not understand or
trust non-MS OSs. They do trust results and as long as win versions
of php are available and well maintained I've got plenty to show them.

What they know is that the pecl4windows website doesn't exist anymore.
They know no new extension package has been offered.
They believe new extensions, whether beta or not, are not likely to
become available.
They know that 1st quarter 2009 was to see windows.php.net be
ready. They think delays == vaporware.

They also believe that there is indifference (if not outright hostility)
to php/win in the php developer community.

Personally, I could care less about further entrenchment of windows
in the business world. I'd like to see MS disappear. Unfortunately,
these issues are real.

If the point is to alienate businesses with a "who cares about windows"
attitude, then why bother with win-php at all?

If there is merit to introducing open source to current windows users,
then why make it difficult to do so?

Just looking to make life easier.
Don't blame me for the attitudes of those who pay me.

(And, no - compiling extensions is not an option).

That's exactly how I "inlist" here.

I usually follow threads and even sometime reply

I've here about 90 days (I suppose)

The list is really interesting, but I was expecting more "ninja" threads.
I know this list is wide open to anyone, ninja or newby, but I was
expecting more.

Anyway I'm really happy to be part of.

I originally found it here: http://www.php.net/mailing-lists.php when I
was looking for responsive help, and have always accessed it via a
newsgroup on news.php.net instead of as a mailing list. The news server
times out quite a bit though. It is doing it today frequently.
