Adaptec 1430SA

am 08.09.2009 15:56:52 von Jon Hardcastle

Does anyone have any experience with Adaptec controllers? Namely

http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/sata/sataii/AAR-1430SA/

I want to increase my machines drive capacity and reply the existing 2 =
port pci-e with this bad boy.

Also; any ideas of a good price? Have seen for ~=A370 + p&p

Jon, Are you going to use the RAID capability on that card or just use
it to get extra SATA ports?

Jon, According to this link (
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.ports.x86-64/bro wse_thread/=
thread/12f2084ceace4c08?pli=3D1
) that card uses fake raid, so you're better off using it as just a
SATA port provider rather than using the RAID capabilities of the card
itself.

Hi, thanks for the link! I was planning on just using it as a means to =
get more ports - and then use mdadm to actually to the raid part.

Re: Adaptec 1430SA

I had bought one of these to use with my Intel D955XBK board and ended
up returning it. I could not get the Adaptec controller BIOS screen to
come up. It kept saying something about not having enough memory. Not
sure why it wasn't compatible as Adpatec adapters are normally good.

I ended up returning and it purchasing a Supermicro AOC-USAS-L8i
adapter which uses the LSI SAS 1068E chip. You can get these cheap off
eBay. The only downside is theses are made for the PCI Express UIO
slot on the Supermicro boards. I didn't realize it at the time, but
the UIO boards have the components mounted on the opposite side. I had
to swap out the PCI bracket so I could secure it in the case and it
takes up the space of two slots. If this isn't a big deal to you then
the card works great.

There are three different firmware modes available from Supermicro for
that card. I have the IT mode firmware which disables the RAID support
of the card. The drives are passed straight through to the OS without
having to configure anything in the card's BIOS. I can even use the
smartmontools to monitor the drives health.

Been doing a spot of Googling around this myself. Looks like there's
open source code available to support seeing the discs, either with
sata_mv or Adaptec's own aar81xx drivers, which will get you going for
what you say above. However, if you did want to use HostRAID (Adaptec's
name for fakeraid) you either have to build Adaptec's driver linking in
their closed-source binary HostRAID code or use the open source dmraid.

I'm a bit mystified at the idea of Adaptec using Marvell chips, though.
I wonder what that's all about?

Cheers,

John.

AT the end, they have a list of components, cheap ones. One is a
2-port sata card and another is a 4-port sata card. You might find
them appealing to your usage.

Hi all,

I've used a Supermicro 8-port Marvell PCI-X card in Linux that works
really well. There's driver support in the kernel for it and it's
great. The type is AOC-SAT2-MV8:
http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SAT 2-MV8.cfm

I've also used a PCI-Express card from Supermicro, the AOC-SASLP-MV8,
that did NOT work as well. I only managed to get it running on the
Linux 2.6.31 release candidates, and even then, it loses disks under
heavy load such as when building an array. There is work ongoing in
the relevant subsystems of the Linux kernel, so I predict that it will
work fine in kernel 2.6.31 final, but I wouldn't count on it just yet.
The card is well built and looks good, it's just that driver support
isn't solid yet.

So, Supermicro multiport SATA cards: PCI-X good, PCI-Express not so
great. Both cards are quite cheap as far as I can tell, and solidly
designed. Supermicro using them is also a vote of confidence in my
book.

Hope this helps someone!

Re: Adaptec 1430SA

Hello,
I am using Adaptec 1430SA. I chose it because it was the only:
* reasonably priced (no hw raid),
* >2 port controller,
* pci-e faster than x1.

=46rom bad news, I cannot access its "configuration utility" during
startup, just as Ryan mentioned. I'm using Asus P5K-E (P35 chipset),
and 1430SA lives in non-gfx pci-e slot. I don't cry though, I never
wanted to use its fakeraid for anything.

I'm running 2.6.23-0.214.rc8.git2.fc8 and currently only a WD10EADS is
hooked up to the 1430SA. I'm using sata_mv driver, and it looks more
or less like this:

sata_mv 0000:04:00.0: version 1.0
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:04:00.0[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16

sata_mv 0000:04:00.0: Gen-IIE 32 slots 4 ports ? mode IRQ via INTx
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:04:00.0 to 64

..

Initially I was worried about
sata_mv 0000:04:00.0: Applying 60X1C0 workarounds to unknown rev
sata_mv 0000:04:00.0: Gen-IIE 32 slots 4 ports ? mode IRQ via INTx
because support for 1430SA was added just around 2.6.23, so it seems
my kernel doesn't really recognise it correctly (should be 7-something
chip). I was worried about some data corruption with sata_mv (that
I've just read about) but both issues turned out to be no problem. It
works perfectly and I've not encountered any corruption across 1TB of
md5'ed files. I suggest using newer kernel though.

So to sum up, I found it good value for money with no real drawbacks.

Cheers,
Mike

Are you referring to the Addonics ADSA4R5? Thanks for the heads up! Is =
PCI straight up got the throughput for 4 devices? I have a 2 port cheap=
y PCI via card Sata 1 and it has turned out to be abit of a mare...

Whilst I have a skilled audience :) Do you have any experience with por=
t multiplier?

So on the whole we have glowing reviews all round.. Yippe!

I can get it and switch out my 2 port for a 4 port; add 2 more drives..=
and wait patiently for raid5~6 conversion to get reliable so I can sle=
ep easy about >1TB drives in my array!

Cheers guys.

Jon, I don't know what your motherboard is nor what your PCI bus
version is, so you may want to take a look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI

At that link you can see the PCI bus speeds for the different versions
and calculate how much you'll get out of your disks.

I suggest you run a quick benchmark of how quick your disks can
read/write (using hdparm -tT or dd). If you're not familiar with
either, check this:
http://mbhtech.blogspot.com/2009/09/software-raid-vs-lvm-qui ck-speed-test_08.html

When benchmarking the disk, make sure it's connected to a native SATA
port, not to a PCI card, to make sure that the numbers you're getting
are not crippled by the PCI card or so.

P.S.: Last year I bought 2 dual SATA port cards that were cheap from
Amazon, hoping to expand my storage easily. Those two required
flashing their controller with newer firmware and because the
manufacturer's website was so vague, I ended up bricking the first
card (flashed the wrong BIOS/firmware). And even when the 2nd card
detected the 1TB disks, it was utter crap; the cables were mostly
loose due to low-quality connectors.

So because BackBlaze is using the cards they said they use, I'm sure
at least those have good connectors and firmware!
