Dear List -
I posted part of this question on the general list. I am posting
here just in case this list did not see the post. This should NOT be
taken as any type of negative reference to the general list, the
members of which have furnished me excellent help.
Question:
What books would your recommend to learn HTML/CSS, MySQL and
PHP? The books should start from the basic level and proceed to the
intermediate/advanced level.
Thanks.
Ethan

This question is asked all the time -- the trouble is that the answer
is too personal to be of any use to you.
People's recommendations will change based on:
=A0-- experience (no programming vs. some vs. a lot),
=A0-- history (programmed in X, not in Y and vice-versa)
=A0-- age (young farts vs. we wise sages)
=A0-- educational background (technical vs. not and more)
What I used to tell me students (when there were only books) was this:
go to the book store:
=A0-- pick up a book that is coded to your self-assesses skill: beginner, e=
tc.
=A0-- Look at the Table of Contents: does the language meld with yours?
=A0-- Go to the index: Try to look up something you are wondering about,
or a problem you have.
=A0If you can find pertinent information -- buy it
Try another one...

MySQL:

html/css no idea, I dont have good ideas of designing even if I become
fluent in css.But its handy to know css just how it generally works and
its place on the web....Anyways, dont listen to me, I am more of a
programmer rather than web-developer....So my first starting point was
PHP, and along the way I am becoming fluent on the rest of the web-tools.
Its nice I think to know your interests Server Side or Frontend. If you
intend to be Server Side Dev, then HTML && PHP && MySQL are the starting
point.....Frontend you should start off with CSS,HTML , Javascript.....etc.

Learning HTML/CSS, MySQL and PHP ...
On my desk I have php|Architect's Guide to PHP Design Patterns,
php|Architect's Zend PHP 5 Certification Guide, Microsoft's Code
Complete, The Gang of 4 and Jan Goyvaerts Regular Expression Cookbook.
For my HTML and CSS, I use online references and validators - most of
the time I build small chunks and use them as templates.
I use MS SQL, so I have MS BOL (Books OnLine).
My JS work is done mainly using PrototypeJS, so there manual is online.
And of course, there is the PHP manual at docs.php.net.
