ANNOUNCE: ActivePerl 5.8 and 5.10 Community Edition - end of support
ANNOUNCE: ActivePerl 5.8 and 5.10 Community Edition - end of support
am 10.06.2011 01:28:27 von Jan Dubois
Official ActiveState policy announcement:
------------------------------------------------------------ ------------
With the upcoming release of ActivePerl 5.14.1, ActiveState will no
longer be offering 5.8 and 5.10 Community Edition builds for free
download. As is currently the case with ActivePerl 5.6, these older
versions will continue to be available through ActivePerl Business and
Enterprise Edition.
In the future, only the two most recent stable releases will be
available for free download. This corresponds to the Perl community's
own version support policy:
http://docs.activestate.com/activeperl/5.14/lib/pods/perlpol icy.html#maintenance_and_support
Whenever the underlying Perl version becomes "unsupported" by the Perl
community itself, support for the corresponding ActivePerl versions will
be limited to Business and Enterprise Edition customers.
You can continue to use older ActivePerl releases indefinitely under the
terms of the Community Edition license, you just won't be able to
download the installers from ActiveState. If for some reason you cannot
update to a supported version of Perl, hang on to your copy of the
installer!
The PPM repositories for unsupported ActivePerl releases will remain
freely accessible for at least 6 months after support ends, but they may
no longer be updated with new builds from CPAN.
------------------------------------------------------------ ------------
Cheers,
-Jan

Hi Jan,
Do you know if there is a stable Ubuntu version that has Perl 5.12 or Perl
5.14 pre-installed?
Thanks.

I'm not sure how that is related to the end-of-support announcement for
5.8 and 5.10. But anyways, there is no stable Ubuntu that has 5.12 or
5.14 pre-installed. The next release should have 5.12, but by the time
they move to 5.14 we will probably have Perl 5.16 available...
You can of course always run ActivePerl on Ubuntu to get the latest
and greatest... :)
Cheers,
-Jan

Are there any compatibility issues with PDK v9.x and ActiveState's 5.14 perl distribution?

Yes.
5.14 will require PDK 9.1, which is still unreleased. Look for it to be
out fairly soon.
